What is the Difference between Vegan and Cruelty Free?

If you’re anything like the 2019 me, you probably think there is no difference! Surely anything that is cruelty free must be vegan and anything that is vegan must be cruelty free?

When I initially started changing all my products over to cruelty free products I just presumed they were different terms for the same thing. It is a little confusing as they’re often used interchangeably, but there is a difference.

Let me break it down for you:

What are Cruelty Free Products?

A product which is cruelty-free means that neither the product nor the ingredients or components have been tested on animals. Watch out though as there are many companies that don’t test the final product, but do test some of the ingredients. The best way to look out for products that are 100% cruelty free is by the Cruelty Free Internationals’ leaping bunny or PETA.

What are Vegan Products?

Vegan beauty products don’t contain any animal ingredients. It’s common to find animal derived components like lanolin or shellac in toiletries and make-up, but vegan products will exclude all of these. Vegan products can be tested on animals and to be honest If I had it my way, I wouldn’t classify something as being vegan if it’s been tested on animals.

Best case – Vegan & Cruelty Free Beauty Products

The best case scenario are brands that are both vegan and cruelty free. You need to look for these descriptions on a product which can be hard to find, but not impossible. As more and more people transition to cruelty free and vegan products, I’m hoping in time it becomes a lot more recognisable on packaging to keep up with the growing demand.

Few Brands that are Vegan & Cruelty Free

  • Tarte – Their concealer is meant to be AMAZING!
  • Urban Decay – I have their setting spray and it is honestly the best, keeps my make up on all night.
  • Faith In Nature – I haven’t tried them YET, but they’re next on my list when my shampoo/conditioner runs out!
  • Lush – Their Products smell divine and who doesn’t love bath goodies!

Watch out – Not so Black & White

A company can actually claim exactly what they want on their own label which is of course worrying when looking out for these vegan and cruelty free products. The best way to confirm that they are vegan and cruelty free is to so look for accreditation by known and respected organizations such as Choose Cruelty Free, The Vegan Society, PETA, or Leaping Bunny in order to know that the claim is legit.

Real life examples of this are Garnier and L’Oreal which are sold in China where testing on animals is required by law for all imported cosmetics. On some of their products, they claim to be vegan and cruelty free which is of course not true.

How do Huge Brands get away with False Advertising?

You may be wondering how are these huge brands getting away with this false advertising? The answer is, because they can! There are no rules and regulations on packaging which is why it’s important to stay informed on what these labels mean and who may be misleading us.

How Can I Make sure all my Brands I purchase are Vegan and Cruelty Free?

As well as doing some pre-planning before buying products by researching from the sites I mentioned earlier, here are some logos to look out for on packaging to ensure that the brands you’re buying are both vegan and cruelty free:

In summary, there is a huge difference between vegan and cruelty free products. Sometimes, products can be both cruelty free and vegan and other times they are either one or the other or none. It’s so important that moving forward you do double check that all the products you use cover both categories. As mentioned you can double check with the logos to be 100% sure!
